Fraxel Laser

The Fraxel Laser addresses more than wrinkles and lines (the exterior signs of ageing), it also improves the functionality of your skin.

Skin texture, large pores, discolouration (brown spots), loose sagging skin and fine lines and wrinkles all contribute to an ‘aged appearance’.

The Fraxel Laser treats these factors by targeting the damages skin with microscopic laser columns that penetrate the skin layers. The laser only treats a fraction of the tissue at a time, leaving the surrounding tissue untouched which promotes rapid healing. This stimulates your body’s own natural healing process, replacing the old and damaged cells with fresh, glowing, healthy skin.

The results are both immediate and progressive. Soon after treatment the surface of your skin will feel softer and smoother, look brighter and show a more even tone. The next 3 to 6 months will bring more improvement as the deeper layers of the skin continue to create new collagen.

Consider that the skin of the face is just like your bed at home.

The top layer of the skin is like the doona, the middle layer is the mattress, and the lower layer is like the bed base. As we get older, any of these layers, and sometimes, all three, suffer from the ageing process. The result is a dragging down of the face, lines and heaviness along the jaw-line.

As we age, the outer layer becomes bulky and the skin loses its elasticity just like the bedsprings in an ageing mattress. The bed-springs in our analogy are the equivalent to the collagen in our skin. In fact, there are a great deal of similarities between bedsprings and collagen because collagen is a spring-like molecule that gradually unwinds as we age so that the skin loses its natural elasticity.

So how does it work?

The Fraxel Laser energy improves the function of the ‘bedsprings’, by stimulating the production of collagen beneath the skin. This is a gradual process which means that you will see continuing improvement even months after your initial treatment.

Until Fraxel, doctors used traditional ablative lasers to strip the ‘bed-linen’ (top layer of skin) from the mattress which usually resulted in a lengthy healing time and increased the risk of complications. Most of these traditional lasers are ‘non-fractional’ which means the total surface of the skin is obliterated and require long recovery time due to the fact they have large spot sizes.. The Fraxel re:store is a fractionated laser. Not all patients are suited for Fraxel re:store laser depending upon the patient’s particular circumstances and the area being treated. The Fraxel ‘re-pair’ and the Acupulse laser are also both fractionated laser where deeper penetration is required to achieve the desired result.

Fraxel Laser and treating scars.

The clinic can offer treatments for scars caused by trauma or previous surgery, such as sub-mammary scars and abdominoplasty scars. These types of scarring can be improved with the Fraxel Re:Store® Laser after three treatments, but it’s important to note that they may not completely disappear. However, a 50-60% improvement is a realistic expectation.

Small scars (excluding multiple acne scars) and significantly raised scars, such as keloids, cannot unfortunately be treated using the Fraxel Re:Store® Laser.
