Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)

Sweating can cause embarrassment and stress and may interfere with your daily life. If topical agents have not helped, you may be a candidate for treatments we have available at epiclinic®.

WHAT IS EXCESSIVE SWEATING?

Excessive sweating is a medical condition. Those who sweat excessively may do so due to overactive sweat glands. Sweat is your body’s temperature regulator; however, in some cases, it can significantly exceed the body’s normal requirement for cooling.

If you sweat at a high level that you find embarrassing or hindering to everyday actions such as shaking hands, an introductory hug or having a conversation in close quarters then treatment might be something to consider. Men and women can both struggle with hyperhidrosis, to the extent that a shirt may be drenched in sweat after minimal or no movement at all.

HOW DOES TREATMENT WORK?

The treatment that we can offer you to temporarily manage excessive sweating works by closing off the chemical signals from the nerves that activate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands are unable to receive these signals, excessive sweating stops. Many patients find that they have incredible results from this treatment.

WHAT DO YOU USE FOR TREATMENT?

epiclinic® treats severe sweating with small injections of a prescription-only product. This product is a muscle relaxer and blocker product. The product is most often known as botulinum toxin. It has been safely used to treat a number of medical conditions. This includes cerebral palsy and cervical dystonia. It is also safely used to treat migraines, and to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

WHAT AREAS CAN I TREAT?

The majority of patients undergo treatment in their armpits. Treatment is also an option for those who sweat excessively from their hands, feet and their face.

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT FROM TREATMENT?

Excessive sweating treatments are very effective at reducing the amount that you sweat. The results can take a couple of days to take effect. At this point, your body will be able to establish a normal sweating pattern. It is important to note that this treatment will not stop you from sweating completely. You will still be able to sweat. Your body will still be able to regulate its temperature. You will simply sweat less.

A study that was conducted by epiclinic® demonstrated that the treatment lasted on average between 7 and 12 months. For someone who has suffered from the embarrassment of excessive sweating, this period of time away from sweating is incredibly welcome.

DOES THIS TREATMENT HURT?

We use very small needles to deliver the treatment. We can offer topical numbing solutions to help you if needed. Each person has his or her own tolerance for pain. Generally speaking, the injections involve just very mild discomfort.

HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE LAST?

The length of the procedure can vary, but typically takes just a few minutes to administer the injections.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER THE INJECTIONS?

This is a non-invasive procedure that does not require extensive downtime. The majority of patients are able to return to work or their regular routine right after getting treatment. You may experience some minor bruising, redness or tenderness in the treated area.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE-EFFECTS?

Any treatment can bring with it the risk for side-effects. Some of the side-effects of this treatment are very minor. They may include bruising, redness, itching and tenderness.

Some of the more serious and rare complications could include an allergic reaction, headache, tiredness or an interaction with other medications. It’s always important to provide us with a complete medical history so that we can focus on your health and safety.
