About Marionette Lines

Marionette lines, or ‘mouth frown’, are the lines that run straight downwards from the corners of the mouth. These lines develop as facial volume starts to diminish and deeper folds begin to form around the mouth. Marionette lines can be corrected by administering dermal filler injections in and around the lines. These injections replace the volume and hydration lost during the ageing process. The overall goal of this treatment is to soften the appearance of the lines and rejuvenate that part of your face.

How Does the Treatment Work?

Local anaesthetic is combined with the product which improves comfort during the procedure. Dermal filler is then injected into the relevant areas around the mouth. The number of injections that are required will depend on what needs to be achieved. Multiple areas can be injected if volume loss is affecting more than just the mouth area.

Dermal filler is made from a natural substance found in the skin that decreases as we age. It’s for this reason that fillers made from this substance are a suitable choice for facial rejuvenation. The treatment will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. The result is a smoother, more refreshed and youthful appearance, particularly around the mouth.

The Benefits of Dermal Fillers:

  • Treatments are non-invasive
  • Patients can schedule sessions over their lunch hour
  • Severe surgical procedures can be avoided
  • Minimal discomfort is experienced
  • Little to no downtime
  • Results can be reversed using a dissolving enzyme

Patient suitability for this Treatment?

Suitable candidates for this treatment are individuals who want their marionette lines to be less prominent. You may have started noticing these wrinkles as you’ve gotten older or because you’re a smoker, or you may always have had lines due to genetics. Patient suitability can only be determined during a personalised consultation with a doctor. You may also realise that you could benefit from additional treatments once your face has been evaluated. Very often, restoring volume in one area will highlight volume loss in another, which is why more than one area often needs to be targeted with fillers.

What Should I Expect After Treatment?

Minor swelling is a common side effect of dermal filler treatments but will subside within a few days – generally no more than two. Although relatively uncommon, bruising may also occur after fillers but won’t be overly visible. Major side effects are extremely rare and are not a cause for concern. Like all other medical procedures, there are potential complications associated with dermal filler treatment and these will be discussed with you in depth during your consultation with a doctor.

Any bruising and swelling will only last for a day or two and can easily be covered with makeup. While some patients do take a day or two off work, this isn’t necessary. It’s important to not engage in any strenuous activities or do anything that could cause you to sweat excessively, such as sitting in the sun or a sauna – at least for the first 48 hours anyway. You should also refrain from touching or rubbing the treated area for the first 24 hours as this could affect your results. Dermal filler produces immediate results but you will need to wait for any swelling to subside before the final results will be visible. You can expect your results to last anywhere from 12 – 18 months, after which, you will require a top-up session.

Who will perform this treatment?

Dermal fillers will always be administered by a qualified doctor, with the aim of improving natural appearance. The reason why not just anyone can administer these injections is that specific knowledge is required about how the product interacts with the skin tissue.

Can I Combine Fillers with Other Treatments?

It’s very common for patients to combine anti-ageing treatments. Dermal fillers are very often combined with anti-wrinkle injections to create an overall smoother appearance. We will help you with a personalised treatment plan that will address your specific concerns. Cosmetic injections can also be combined with other non-surgical treatments such as laser if it’s required. We will provide you with information on all your options during your consultation.
