The marks caused by skin pigmentation form because there is an abnormal production and deposition of melanin by the melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) under the skin.
The number of melanocytes in the skin determine our skin colour. The production of melanin is dependent on sun exposure, and is a natural protective mechanism of the skin.
Hyperpigmentation or excess skin pigmentation is normally caused by an overwhelming amount of melanin in our protective system. This leads to excess production and clumping of melanin, and darker spots of pigmentation on the effected areas of our skin.
Some of the Main Causes of Hyperpigmentation are:
Birthmarks – Present at birth, or acquired pigmenation can develop in child or adulthood.
Hormonal – A type of pigmentation that is usually brought on by birth control pills or pregnancy.
UV Radiation – This is the most common cause of pigmentation, especially in areas that have high UV radiation.
Physical Trauma – Skin trauma which can be caused by acne or chemical peels.
Pigmentation removal is a fast, gentle and non-invasive treatment. TheIPL laser is absorbed only by the cells that contain high concentrations of melanin. The laser does not get rid of the normal skin colour or harmany of the surrounding tissues. The pulses of light generated by the laser feel similar to a flicking sensation and for most individuals this sensation is tolerable. Darkening of the treated area is noticed immediately after treatment. The area will look like a dark scab for 7 to 10 days which will eventually shed off.
The level of discomfort varies from patient to patient, but most patients experience little to no pain.
